If you are traveling to Rome one of the things you are probably most excited for is the food. Everyone says you haven’t experienced true Italian food until you’ve actually been to Italy. Get out there and eat your weight in fresh pasta that will blow your mind. Bite into the delicious flavors and textures of true Italian pizza that will have you questioning every slice you’ve had before. However, when that is all said and done make sure that you save room for the best part of Italian food, dessert. When it comes to Italian dessert it doesn’t get any better than authentic gelato. William Bailey Travel reviews some of the best places to top of your meal…while in Rome.
Ciampini is located on the Piazza San Lorenzo between the Spanish Steps and the Pantheon. This chic little café scoops up some of the most classic flavors of gelato. You cannot go wrong with the classics of either pistachio or coffee. The flavors are strong and scrumptious just as they should be and the creamy texture will simply melt in your mouth. Grab a cone or a dish of their gelato and sit outside in the square and people watch. It’s a perfect place to rest and take in the ambiance of the city, as you enjoy your taste treat.
If you are visiting the Vatican, Gelateria dei Gracchi is just a brief 10 minute walk and is located on Via dei Gracchi. Their gelato is made from fresh all organic ingredients. Two of the most popular are the tried and true pistachio that is made from fresh roasted Sicilian pistachios, and the chocolate and rum that is made from chocolate fondant. Yes, you can get a scoop of each; they marry well with each other.
One of the favorite gelato shops with locals and tourists alike is I Caruso. It is just a 10 minute walk from the train station on at Via Collina. This might be a little bit of a hole in the wall, but they serve some of the freshest gelato in the city. It is made on site, and you can actually watch them do it with fresh ingredients. Try one of their fruit flavors that burst with the fresh fruit flavors. No artificial ingredients here to enhance the flavor, just pure ingredients.
Luckily Rome is a city that is best seen on foot. You’ll need the additional exercise after you become a complete glutton for their cuisine. After your first bite of genuine Italian gelato, you will be hard-pressed to pass it by on a daily basis.
