Bill Bailey Litchfield Illinois Exploring the Mother Road

Posted on 03.18.15

Bill Bailey Litchfield Illinois Exploring the Mother RoadJust 2 hours north of Litchfield on Historic Route 66, travelers who love exploring the Mother Road will find a destination like no other. The Route 66 Hall of Fame and Museum is located in the city of Pontiac and helps to tell the story of the many unique and long-lasting attractions which have survived changing times, struggling economies and just time itself.

Litchfield itself is home to a few of its own historic sites which have made the Hall of Fame including the Ariston Café and the Sky View Drive-In. A great way to spend the day or a weekend, come on a journey with us to Pontiac and learn more about the Hall of Fame Museum and the historic Route 66.

Route 66 was banished from the list of American highways in 1985 and earned a new place in the annuls of history. No longer a part of the highway system, portions of the route began to fall into disrepair, sites disappeared and Route 66 began to fade from the memories of many Americans. Thankfully, Route 66 earned recognition not as a road which once was but as a Route which played an integral road in our history and should remain part of our lives still.

In 2004the Route 66 Hall of Fame and Museum opened its doors to the public in Pontiac Illinois. A popular attraction in the state, it features thousands of artifacts and other memorabilia related to the Mother Road and its history. Recently named one of the must-see destinations of the week by RoadsideAmerica.com, the museum is home to the bus and van of Bob Waldmire, a iconic Route 66 artist, plenty of travel resources, a massive mural, and many small items which represent a large part of our past.

Take a tour of the museum, learn more about the past and enjoy making your own history as well as you journey down Illinois’ Historic Route 66.
